The Vein & Laser Clinic was founded in 1992 under the
direction of Dr. Ferdinand Stasiak. Since its inception, the facility
established itself in the forefront of the treatment of varicose and spider
veins in British Columbia. In ’92, after having served for several years as a
Clinical Associate in the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Ottawa Civic
Hospital, Dr. Stasiak attended a conference on varicose veins in Montreal,
which featured European experts introducing some innovative and exciting
developments in the field of phlebology. Fulfilling a desire to offer his
patients those promising treatments, he traveled to Paris, France to observe
and learn the advanced ultrasound-guided techniques from several pioneers
in the field of phlebology and subsequently dedicated his practice full time to
the treatment of varicose vein disease. The clinic opened in North
Vancouver in December '92, initially under Lonsdale Vein Clinic and became
first in British Columbia to use duplex ultrasound by the bedside, not only in
the evaluation but also throughout the entire treatment process of varicose
vein disease.
Varicose veins are a frequently encountered medical and cosmetic ailment, which to this day continues to challenge the ingenuity of the medical profession. Phlebology is a branch of medicine, which deals primarily with varicose vein disease and it is changing rapidly as it demands constant innovation. Thus, the introduction of ultrasound technology in the early ’90 in Europe was considered a major advance in the field of phlebology as it has deepened our understanding of the anatomy as well as the hemodynamic disturbances that develop in varicose veins. Prior to that, the assessment of varicose veins consisted of outdated tests, which were unreliable in detecting the source of the varicosities. In the same vein, conventional treatment of varicose veins consisted of either stripping or basic compression sclerotherapy able to treat only some of the varicose vein segments located closer to the skin. However, the use of ultrasound allows much better pre-operative evaluation and detection of varicose veins right up to their source. It is also indispensable during several procedures enabling not only precise delivery of laser energy or sclerosing solution to the vein but also removal of the deeper vein segments through only tiny incisions. The technology thus permits the application of minimally invasive techniques with much less downtime than conventional treatments. In addition, the use of ultrasound renders the treatment of varicose veins much safer and more effective with a significant reduction in recurrences as well as complications.
Ambulatory or micro-incision phlebectomy is another
technique that Dr. Stasiak introduced in British Columbia following his trip to
Rome, Italy in ’ 96 to learn the technique, which originated in Switzerland. The
procedure offered removal of large and ropy varicose veins through only tiny
incisions, which was more effective and much less invasive than the conventional
ligation/avulsion method. In addition, The Vein & Laser Clinic is proud to
be the first facility in Canada to perform another major breakthrough treatment
for varicose veins. Introduced first in the United States by Dr. Min at Cornell
University, the endovenous laser treatment or EVLT offered a much less
invasive alternative to stripping, as there is no need for hospitalization
to carry out the procedure, which carries minimal risk of complications or
downtime. In ' 02, Dr. Stasiak traveled to new York City to observe the
technique from Dr. Min and since his introduction of the procedure in Canada,
the facility has treated hundreds of patients who are now enjoying its benefits
and walking around in comfort without the relentless burden of varicose veins.
At The Vein & Laser Clinic
our main focus is varicose and spider veins but over many years, we have
introduced various treatments and procedures for a whole range of other
cosmetic conditions. Thus, a whole new generation of medical lasers and radiofrequency skin tightening devices such as
Thermage offer a wide array
of treatments that can safely and effectively enhance one’s appearance or
eliminate unwanted skin conditions such as rosacea, age spots, hair, tattoos
and various other skin lesions.
Benefiting from many years of experience as well as keeping
abreast of the latest developments, The Vein & Laser Clinic is able to perform safer and ever more effective treatments
than previously available, thus generating excellent cosmetic results and ultimately
many happy patients.
